Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA)

We undertake Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) and detailed habitat surveys for urban, suburban and rural sites. All surveys are carried out in accordance with recognised guidance and legislation, providing clear advice on ecological constraints and the need for further survey work.

We undertake Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) and detailed habitat surveys for urban, suburban, and rural sites to establish a clear ecological baseline at the earliest stages of a project. Surveys are completed in accordance with recognised best practice guidance and current legislation, using UKHab classification where appropriate, to identify ecological constraints, opportunities, and potential risks associated with development proposals.

A typical assessment includes a walkover survey of habitats and key ecological features, an appraisal of the site’s suitability for protected and notable species, a review of nearby designated sites, and an evaluation of the potential ecological effects of the proposed works. The results provide clear, proportionate advice on the need for further targeted surveys, design amendments, mitigation measures, biodiversity enhancement opportunities, and potential licensing requirements. This ensures ecological issues are identified early, helping to inform site design, support planning applications, and reduce delays later in the project.

All Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments are supported by a scaled QGIS habitat baseline plan, providing a clear, accurate visual representation of existing habitats across the site. These plans help to illustrate habitat distribution and site context, supporting ecological reporting, impact assessment, and BNG calculations with mapped baseline data where required.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Using the Defra Biodiversity Metric, we assess the biodiversity value of habitats and linear features before and after development to determine net loss or gain. This establishes a robust baseline and identifies how habitats can be retained, enhanced, replaced or created to achieve measurable biodiversity improvements and wider ecosystem benefits.
